Here is an example command line: ffmpeg.exe -i video.avi -vcodec libx264 -an converted.m4v The converted file does not have the timestamp and is encoded as standard h264 but the downside is that ffmpeg actually performs a conversion (even though it really shouldn't need to) rather than just a transcode and consequently it takes about 3x as long as the video file (with my 1080p files, 30 fps, on a mid-class machine) to do the conversion. That can be done with ffmpeg or any program that will convert h264 encoded AVIs to mp4/m4v files. If you convert file AVI file to an mp4, the yellow timestamp will not be there. This extra information embedded in the stream is why QNAP uses its own special "q264" encoding rather than the standard "h264" encoding. When using the QNAP playback application, it has settings to control the timestamp on the screen: whether it is there and if so, which corner it is displayed in. If there is a plugin or other configuration to affect how the renderer behaves under media player, I've not found it. The timestamp information is embedded in the stream as metadata and the renderer always renders it under media player, as far as I can tell.

It's added by the renderer that is installed by the Surveillance Station plugin which windows media player uses to render the file. The yellow timestamp isn't actually in the video stream.
